Why could Ruth take grain belonging to others? (Ruth 2:2)
2 And Ruth the Moabite said to Naomi, “Let me go to the fields and pick up the leftover grain behind anyone in whose eyes I find favor.”

Ruth was a relative of Boaz. But more importantly - see Leviticus 23:22. "When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not wholly reap the corners of your field, nor shall you gather any gleaning from your harvest. You shall leave them for the poor and for the stranger: I am the Lord your God." God's Law!

Ruth was aware of the law which allows foreigners, widows, and orphans to take grains, fruits and other produce from fields. God gave Moses the gleaning law, by allowing them to harvest the edges of the field, the grain or the produce that was missed during the initial harvest (Deut 24:19-22; Lev 19:9-10; 23:22). Every family in Israel (except the Levites, who were supported by tithes and offerings) had land given to them and inherited from generation to generation (Num 27:5-11, 36:5-1; Deut 19:14, 27:17; Lev 25) so they can grow food and be self-sufficient. Foreigners, widows, and orphans however, did not have land and thus unable to grow their own food.
