Why would people live among the rocks? (Obadiah 1:3)

The pride of your heart has deceived you,
you who live in the clefts of the rocks
and make your home on the heights,
you who say to yourself,
‘Who can bring me down to the ground?’

Obadiah 1:3

ESV - 3 The pride of your heart has deceived you, you who live in the clefts of the rock, in your lofty dwelling, who say in your heart, "Who will bring me down to the ground?

The Edomites lived in the cliffs and mountains of Mount Seir, trusting their natural strongholds and thinking no one could bring them down (Obadiah 1:3). But God declared in Obadiah 1:4 that He would bring them down, showing that human pride and security cannot stand against His authority. Their fall came through surrounding nations acting as His instruments, reminding us that true safety is found only in God.

Discussion Question: Why do you think the Edomites trusted their mountain strongholds and natural defenses more than God, and what does Obadiah 1:3-4 teach us about the dangers of pride and self-reliance?
