By one count and exposition, there were thirteen separate men named Obadiah (a name meaning "servant of the LORD") mentioned in the Old Testament. The prophet who was the author of the book of Obadiah (the shortest book in the Old Testament, with only twenty-one verses) was one of those thirteen. However, that individual is not mentioned or associated in connection with any of the other men named Obadiah. No, this Obadiah was the Son of Shemaiah, a Levite of Netophah (1 Chron. 9:16). This son of Shemaiah was a member of the tribe of Levi named Obadiah was part of the group of Jews who returned to Jerusalem after the Babylonian Captivity. He was the son of Shemaiah (1 Chronicles 9:16). But the author of Obadiah was the prophet of Judah who lived over 550 years before Christ (Obad. 1). "He was one of the twelve minor prophets: Other than what is disclosed through the book of Obadiah, nothing more is known about Obadiah the prophet. His book, the shortest of the Old Testament with only twenty-one verses, reveals that Obadiah probably lived in the harsh and bitter era after the capture and destruction of Jerusalem by the Babylonians.
