As I understand it, the statue's head of gold denoted the Babylonian kingdom over which Nebuchadnezzar himself ruled at that time. The chest and arms of silver represented the coming Medo-Persian Empire. The belly and thighs of bronze were the Macedonian-Greek Empire that would next be established by Alexander the Great. The legs of iron signified the Roman Empire. The feet with a mixture of iron and clay represent (in my opinion) a kingdom yet to be established in the end times by the Antichrist, which will be defeated/smashed by the returning Christ (represented by the stone not cut out by human hands), who will then rule over the whole world (Revelation 11:15).

The golden head of the state represents the kingdom of Babylon during the 45 years of Nebuchadnezzar's reign. Babylon ruled the world from 612-539 B.C. But Babylon's supremacy would not last forever. 

The silver upper torso represents the Medo-Persia empire that followed. The Medes and Persians ruled the world from 539-331 B.C. During their reign, all taxes had to be paid in silver.

The lower torso of bronze is Greece - 331–168 B.C. Alexander the Great conquered Medo-Persia in 331 B.C. Greece remained in power until about 168 B.C. Greek soldiers were called "brazen coated" because their bronze armor. 

The legs of iron represents Rome who conquered the Greeks in 168 B.C. and enjoyed world supremacy until approximately A.D. 476. 

When the Roman Empire began to crumble, it was not overtaken by another world power. Instead, barbarian tribes conquered the Roman Empire and divided it just as Daniel prophesied. Ten of these tribes evolved into modern Europe: the Ostrogoths, Visigoths, Franks, Vandals, Alemannians, Sueves, Anglo-Saxons, Heruls, Lombards, and Burgundians. 

Seven of them still exist today in Europe - the Anglo-Saxons became the English, the Franks became the French, the Alemannians became the Germans, and the Lombards became the Italians. These are the toes of the feet made part of iron, and part of clay. 

Through marriage, alliances, and treaties, European leaders tried to keep the continent united. Charlemagne, Napoleon, Kaiser Wilhelm, Mussolini, and Hitler attempted to build a united European empire but all failed. 

In 1951 the leaders of six European countries signed the Treaty of Paris, founding the European Coal and Steel Community. In the following years, a series of international treaties led to the creation of the European Union (EU) in 1993. The EU purpose was to unite the entire European continent into a strong nation with one common economy and currency and without borders. However, with the impending Brexit, the 28-nation Union is falling apart (Daniel 2:42, 43). 

Finally, Daniel 2:34, 35 tells that a stone cut without human hands (that represents Jesus (Isaiah 28:16; 1 Cor 10:4; Luke 20:17, 18) broke into pieces all these earthly kingdoms. When He returns, Jesus will destroy all kingdoms and establish a new kingdom that will last forever (Rev 21:1).
