As Eliphaz indicated, people should strive to know God. However, Eliphaz associated improper motives with that effort. The search for God should arise from a sense of humility and of personal need for Him (based on a recognition of one's own imperfection and spiritual poverty in comparison to His holiness), in order to be reconciled to Him. It should emphatically NOT be undertaken as a means of achieving or assuring earthly success or material prosperity, but instead with an understanding of the brevity and transience of this life in comparison to eternity, and the peace and joy of being in His presence forever after that life is over. Such a perspective reduces to insignificance any temporal wealth or happiness that the world or this present age can offer, as well as any adversity or persecution to which those who follow God may now be subject.
