Please define a "Sabbath day's journey."

This statement was curious- why not a day's journey or week's journey (if implied Sabbath to Sabbath)?

Acts 1:12 - 26

NKJV - 12 Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day's journey. 13 And when they had entered, they went up into the upper room where they were staying: Peter, James, John, and Andrew; Philip and Thomas; Bartholomew and Matthew; James the son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot; and Judas the son of James.

By my understanding, based on the Old Testament placement of the Tabernacle (to which all the people of Israel were to go for worship on the Sabbath) in relation to the tents of the Israelites (as specified in Joshua 3:4), the length of a journey permitted on the Sabbath (which was otherwise to be a day of rest from such travel) was 2,000 cubits, or approximately 3,000 feet -- a cubit being defined as the length of the arm from the elbow to the tip of the middle finger, or approximately eighteen inches. (The term "Sabbath-day's journey" could be used to describe a journey of this length, even if (as in the case of the apostles in the passage cited in the question) the journey was not made on the actual Sabbath itself.)
