The word of God clearly states that a wavering man or woman will receive nothing from the Lord. When you need thousands of dollars to cover an expense, it takes work to accomplish a goal. Faith without works is dead faith. Faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not yet seen. Without faith it is impossible to please God. Faith is manifested through trust, not fear. When my wife asks how will we accomplish a goal, my constant reply is, "God will provide." I am a man of action but even my reactions are inspired of the Lord because I pray and believe my steps are ordered of the Lord. I also believe Psalm 23 is truth. It starts out, "The Lord is my Shepherd. I shall not want." Jesus said, "The word and I are one," meaning in total agreement. So my actions, thoughts, words, and deeds must be one with him. Otherwise we are not walking together in faith with our Lord, God and King. Proverbs says unless two be agree they can not walk together or be in agreement. Only faith pleases God. Faith proves that we love and trust in him. The word, the Heavenly Father, Jesus, the Holy Spirit are one. When we totally trust and become one with them, all things become possible with God's help. Life and death are in the power of the tongue. A man who loves the word prospers in all that he does. Think on these things: whatsoever things are pure, that are lovely, that are of a good report, if there be any thing to praise God about, praise him! Just do it! Yes our heavenly Father believes in the power of positive thinking and speaking. God clearly says that he is not a man that he might lie to us. So speak those things that be not as though they already are until they come into fruition. Faith moves obstacles, heals diseases, brings necessary finances, heals marriages, heals a barren womb, delivers us from oppressive spirits and changes lives. I know because I have become an overcomer in all these things through the word, but not without defeats along the way. God has never failed me in my defeats. I failed him by wavering.
James is speaking in this passage specifically of requests for wisdom (James 1:5), which (as noted in Proverbs 1:7) begins with the reverent fear of God. Why would God deny any request from someone who is already a Christian (the audience whom James was addressing (James 1:1)) to know Him better, and to be taught His ways? God would still be as pleased with such a request today as He was when Solomon made it (1 Kings 3:3-14). It seems to me that doubt in such cases on the part of the requester would be indicative of a lack of sincerity, or of unwillingness to act upon the wisdom received. Also, it is the very wisdom for which the person is praying that will allow that person to continually grow and mature in faith and trust. How could the same God who (as Paul noted in Romans 8:32) did not spare His own Son, but gave Him up on our behalf, fail to respond to such a request?
Any time I have a bible question I always ask, "Does the bible answer the question itself first?" This one is easy. 1John 5:14-15: Now this is the confidence we have in Him that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us, and if we know he hears us, we have whatsoever we ask of him. The only difficulty is, are you able to accept whatever his answer to your prayer might be? If Jesus is your Lord, this should be no problem. His will for you is always the best, even though it may not be your will. If you'll do that, pray for your specific request, with the proviso that you really want his will to be done, you'll do it without any doubt whatsoever!
