Scripture encourages us to be salt and light. From an early age, encourage your children, with your guidance, to volunteer in the world around them. My children began volunteer efforts while still in elementary school, including assisting at the local food bank and in community outreach for the hungry and poor. Here they were able to model their faith in action with humility and love. These are excellent teaching opportunities to encourage your children in how to look outside themselves. Especially, humbling is when they experience their own peers in positions of need that they were previously unaware of. Volunteer as a family, model servanthood.

Your children as they grow older will be subjected to many anti-biblical opinions which we need to prepare them to be able to answer correctly and in a logical, truthful manner. Some of the worldly "truths" include:

1. Evolution created all life and we don't need to invoke any God in this process.
Answer. Evolution where microbes become monkeys and eventually man cannot happen, biology just doesn't work that way. Also so called simple microbes aren't simple but are very complex and cannot form spontaneously from chemicals in the environment.

The cosmos with billions of stars just cannot form spontaneously from a big bang. Only God can create matter (stars and earths) from nothing.

2. Geological formations (valleys, mountains, rocks, canyons) formed over billions of years.
Answer. All geological findings including fossil findings are consistent with a massive worldwide flood event (Noah). The fossils in rocks also confirm that biological evolution didn't occur and that all biological life forms appeared suddenly.

The presence of carbon-14 isotope in fossils, oil, diamonds confirm a world thousands not millions of years old.

3. We live in a wonderful world which will get better with time thanks to scientific discoveries.
Answer. This world is winding down, going down hill. Genetics confirm this as does this world around us (we get older, wrinklier and die, things wear out). We are going to see a proliferation of more diseases unfortunately with future generations because of increased mutations.

There appears to be more and more evil in the world and human kind have not learnt the lessons of previous wars. Science cannot cure the evil intent in human hearts, only God can and has achieved that.

4. Scientific discoveries will improve our future lives.
Answer. Science has done wondrous things in curing many diseases through drugs, inoculations and surgical procedures. Scientific discoveries however can only do so much and eventually death and decay (entropy) will win out in the end.

So what is the answer to all this gloom and doom we can teach our young? First the bible is absolute truth and the word of Almighty God. Any so called truths in life must be tested by Holy Scripture. Secondly we need to admit our sinful nature to God and accept Christ's sacrificial death 2,000 years ago to free us from our sins and thereby reconcile us with God. Thirdly we need to ask Jesus to be Our Lord and Savior and fill us with His wonderful Holy Spirit. Then we will know the truth and the truth will set us free indeed.
