Who died on the cross - Jesus as "the Son of God" or Jesus as "the son of man"?

Keep in mind that as God, Jesus is immortal (see 1 Timothy 6:16), but as the son of Mary "according to the flesh" He was mortal (Hebrews 2:14,15).

Hebrews 2:16

NKJV - 16 For indeed He does not give aid to angels, but He does give aid to the seed of Abraham.

I guess the real question is can divinity die? Answer "NO." Jesus did have two natures and the scriptures are clear. In 1 Tim 3:16 "Great is the mystery of godliness," but we do know he was fully human and took a nature of man AFTER sin and not before sin. As a human being Jesus never, never exercised his power for Himself. What I mean is Jesus would never do anything a human being can't do either. Jesus had complete dependence on his Father and we need to have complete dependence on Jesus. Anything that Jesus did we can do too except for paying the penalty for our salvation. For example, Jesus healed, so did his disciples. Jesus walked on water so did Peter. Jesus cast our demons, we can do the same thing but in the name of Jesus and even peach the gospel.

So who died on the cross? Jesus did. Divinity was needed because there was no other being equal to God the Father except for Jesus. Humanity was needed because there has to be someone who can overcome sin in sinful flesh Romans 8:3 and be a mediator between God and the whole human race 1 Timothy 2:5. This verse is powerful because it actually says "The man Christ Jesus". As Jesus depended on Divinity from His Father although he was divine, we too can be a partaker of the divine nature and have victory over sin just like Jesus. 2 Peter 1:2-4. This is a good question and I hope this has given a little more insight because you can't really explain the nature of Christ for it is a mystery.
