I have heard the Word of Faith preachers declare on the basis of their interpretation of Psalm 82:6 that believers are gods and on that basis they can simply confess or make pronouncements over their circumstances of life and things happen. This teaching is utterly false because the scripture is lifted out of its passage context. Psalm 82:6 does not teach that we share any aspects of God’s divine nature or power nor do we have any power of our own that resides in us that God has donated to us. God is always sovereign over our lives and He alone has the power to cause things to happen (Romans 8:28). The message of Psalm 82 addresses and condemns the evils of the Jewish society. Notice that Psalm 82:7-9 calls for God’s judgment and declares His sovereignty over the earth. Accordingly, we can clearly establish that the correct interpretation of Psalm 82:6 was that God was mocking the evil leaders who permitted the oppression of the vulnerable people of the society. There is therefore no justification for a Bible teacher to conclude that God was ascribing any divinity to the believers when the context of the passage speaks otherwise

Let's let God speak on the subject: "Ye are my witnesses, saith the LORD, and my servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me." (Isa 43:10 KJV) "6 Thus saith the LORD the King of Israel, and his redeemer the LORD of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God. 7 And who, as I, shall call, and shall declare it, and set it in order for me, since I appointed the ancient people? And the things that are coming, and shall come, let them shew unto them. 8 Fear ye not, neither be afraid: have not I told thee from that time, and have declared it? Ye are even my witnesses. Is there a God beside me? Yea, there is no God; I know not any." (Isa 44:6-8 KJV) Beware of false teachers who go beyond the Scriptures. Were the risen and glorified Lord Jesus to appear in any of their assemblies, or were the Father to grant them--like Ezekiel--to see his glory, they would instantly find out just how the Lord alone is God. Just walk in faith in the Scriptures and don't let false teachers lead you astray!

There is a huge difference in being made "in the image and likeness" of someone than being made the same "as that person". My sons and daughters are made in my image. But they are not me. The same holds true between us and God. Made in his image and likeness, yes. Made as God is, no. I think a lot of it stems from people not knowing and understanding and accepting our position in Gods creation and the four fold relationship we share with him: Creator to creations. Master to servants. King to subjects Father to children.
