I humbly submit for your consideration; the scientific discipline of Particle Physics as a possible explanation. Simply stated; particle physics is the study of the fundamental particles of the universe or the study of really-really small unseeable stuff.

The currently known or “standard model” has 12 [maybe it's just a coincidence on that number] fundamental particles: six QUARKS and six LEPTONS. From these twelve fundamental particles and their numerous combinations scientists have identified hundreds of other particles and are still discovering others. 
(Isaiah 46:10; Luke 8:10; Luke 8:18)

QUARKS: are the fundamental building blocks of nature combing to form larger particles; protons and neutrons.
LEPTONS: occupy the bottom of the periodic table and are much lighter than quarks.

In real physics there is something known as anti-matter and when a particle meets its anti-particle, they ANNIHILATE and release a large amount of ENERGY.

Bottom Line: Two possible scenarios for your consideration

1. Our modern technology is revealing the hidden mysteries and secrets of the ages, things like black holes and anti-matter. Scientifically it is possible for matter [a star] to annihilate itself and release energy [maybe enough to shake the heavens].

How you have fallen from heaven, morning star, son of the dawn! You have been cast down to the earth, you who once laid low the nations! (Isaiah 14:12)

2. Could the falling stars spoken of; be connected or representative of all the various false belief systems of this world? (Mark 13:5; Mark 13:6; Acts 19:35)

Consider: Sirius the brightest star visible from any part of Earth in the constellation Canis Major the Greater Dog M41. Sirius named after the ancient Egyptian god Osiris was an object of wonder and veneration to all ancient peoples throughout human history and within Freemasonry and it's order of the Eastern star. 

The Arabic word Al Shi'ra resembles the Greek, Roman, and Egyptian names suggesting a common origin in Sanskrit, in which the name Surya, the Sun God, simply means the "shining one." (Ezekiel 11:21; Acts 7:43)

I would say that Jesus was describing the events that would happen from the perspective of someone viewing them from Earth, regardless of the actual physical or astronomical specifics of what was occurring. His words were intended to be a description of what people on Earth would see, rather than a scientific explanation of what those events involved. The fixed stars would appear to be behaving in the same way as meteors, for example, except that they would be falling through the vastness of space, rather than to earth.

At the time of Christ, any light in the sky other than the sun and moon would be called a star, although today we distinguish between stars, planets, asteroids, and comets. "Stars falling from heaven" refer to the debris of comets or asteroids caught up in the earth's gravitational field which either burn up in the atmosphere or strike the surface.

We today have a number of meteor showers (presumably from broken up asteroids) occurring annually such as the Leonids- Nov 5th to 30th, and the Geminids - Dec. 4th to 16th. These are basically harmless displays of light from small objects which always burn up in our atmosphere.

Since the book of Revelation indicates at least one asteroid strike (Rev 6:12-13, 8:8, 16:17 -21) the volume of material falling to earth at that time will be considerably greater than anything seen on earth for thousands of years, and the damage inflicted by these objects will be tremendous, in addition to the impact of the asteroid itself.
