Recognize the sin, and acknowledge your commission of it, or your responsibility for it.

Repent of it. (That is, feel genuine sorrow and remorse for having committed it.)

Ask God's forgiveness of it for Jesus' sake.

Make reparations (insofar as possible) to anyone adversely affected by the sin.

With the help of the Holy Spirit, make whatever lifestyle or circumstantial changes are needed (including making a renewed commitment to God and to the study of His word) to avoid a repetition of the conditions that originally led or contributed to the sin.

Accept whatever temporal judgment God may impose as a result of the sin.

Promptly seek God's forgiveness for any relapses that may occur with regard to the sin.

Again with the help of the Holy Spirit, do not allow any such failures to pull you back into a recurring pattern of the sin.

It is a great question asked and is important to know for all of us since we all desire and strive to go to heaven!. But in heaven there is no sin and that is not for a few years but for eternity! That means if we want to go to heaven we should never be the people of the habit of sinning or in other words we can go to heaven only when we fully recover from falling into sin and are sinless.

Jesus says, "Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he" Mt 11:11

Now the question is how do we recover from that habit of falling into sin?

First of all release your fist. Be open to the working of God in you. Accept whatever happened to you so far or happening in the future or now is through the will, grace and power of God. Forgive those on whom you have grudge or ill feeling and ask forgiveness if you feel and experience that is what going to heal you spiritually and physically with God's message and presence. Remember, accept and profess that you are not owned by yourself or by anyone except by God himself. Anything you do or say do it in the light of the Lord and be happy and confident that it is not you but God working in you. Do not complain, grumble or feel sorry for any thing that is not as per your expectations and calculations. We see it in the story of Jonah, Moses, Job, Jacob, David, Solomon, Elijah, Apostles, Peter, Paul, Judas, Stephen, Augustin, Francis, Patrick, Abraham, Adam, Eve and in many more. God is there for us in our failures as he is in our success. He is there for us in prosperity as he is there in our loss, suffering, torture, sickness, hopelessness, crisis and devastation. 

We should never abandon, blame or curse God in failures and tortures if we praise him and thank him in success and pleasures. Because he is the maker of both good and evil and redeemer of it. We should fall into the habit of thanking and praying for his grace and help in everything that happens to us good, bad, pleasure, pain, sorrow, happiness, life or death. Only then we will recover from falling into sin and become worthy heirs of kingdom of God which is meant to last for ever and ever. The best examples for this is Jesus, Mary, Joseph and many other saints, apostles and holy persons in their life time on earth.

Of course, it is hard to practice and easier to say. You might have failed and I have failed many times. But I have realized now the pain, suffering, excommunication, insult, torture, sickness, hunger, poverty and joblessness we experience bring us more closure to God and accepting it and praying to him to deliver from it will certainly make us acceptable to God in many fold that we can ever imagine!. I have experienced it and you will surely experience it. 

May God be our guide, helper and protector.

After genuine repentance from the act that led to the sin, we must invite the Holy Spirit to continue to guide us in all that we do. We should be righteousness conscious instead of being sin conscious. 1John 3:6 Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.
From the above scripture, when you are born again, sin has no dominion over you anymore!
1John 5:18 We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not.

Sin is used by some as an escape from the pains of life in general, as a means of pleasing our fleshly desires, and a way of rebellion against God. The foundation to overcoming any of our sinful acts is to look back to the cross.

God loves us so much that Jesus Christ took our punishment, our pain, and our suffering on the day His blood was shed on the cross for us. Not only did He endure the punishment that we deserve, He also removed the guilt and anguish that we suffer while being trapped in our fleshly bodies. Is there any sin that you can commit that does not ultimately end with hurting yourself or others? No, and God doesn't want you to hurt yourself or anyone else. All of even our own "hurt" was removed at the cross. Look at HIS hurt and realize that it was taken by Him for you. YOU no longer have to be in pain. Remember that God forgave you of ALL your sins that day on the cross. His image on the cross, His love for you, His grace being greater than all of your sins combined should help you in time to desire removing that sinful nature that we all struggle with.

1 Cor 6:12
"All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any."

What God did out of His love for us through Jesus Christ is the power we need to overcome living for ourselves and the ability we find to start living for Him in return.
