Mr. Houdmann's answer includes 1 Samuel 15:10 comparing divination to the "sin of rebellion." Perhaps the two sins are similar because: both may be attempts to ignore God's authority. both may try to avoid seeking God's guidance.
King Saul did not know whether to go into battle or not. Samuel the prophet was dead. Saul went to the witch Endor to have Samuel brought up from the dead. Samuel told Saul that he and his son would be killed the next day in battle. Samuel told Saul, The Lord said, tomorrow you and your son will be with me. Both Jonathan and Saul died the next day. Jonathan was killed in battle, and Saul fell on his own sword to keep from being taken captive. If God wanted us to know what tomorrow is going to be like, He would have told us. He said, do not say you will go into such and such a city and buy and sell and get gain, because you do not know what your life is going to be like tomorrow. If the Lord wills you will do this or that. No one saw the flood coming to New York and the other states around them. Their plans were all changed over night. The things they planned on doing the next day were changed. Millions are without power and water.
Michael said divination is associated with the occult. "Occult means 'hidden'. It covers practices that are not approved of by God e.g., astrology (Is. 47:13), casting spells (Deut. 18:11 -- Deut. 18:10-11 is, in my opinion, one of the five key passages about divination), consulting with spirits (Deut. 18:11), magic (Gen. 41:8), sorcery (Exodus 22:8), witchcraft (Deut. 18:10), and spiritism (Deut. 18:11). "Occult practices such as ouji boards, tarot cards, astrology charts, contacting the dead, seances, etc. Are to be avoided by the Christian." Much money was made through another of the key passages on divination: the slave with the spirit of Python, (Acts 16:16). --Smith Bible Dictionary Unfortunately, as a boy I played ignorantly with our ouji board until I either tired of it or learned that it was wrong. I am sure Jesus has forgiven me of this, as He has all my other sins. Praise His holy name!
