The story of Achan's sin and God's punishment is found in Joshua 7. Achan was an Israelite who fought the battle of Jericho with Joshua. God had commanded the Israelites to destroy the entire city ...
Jericho was the first city that was conquered, and was symbolic of the "first fruits," which was to be completely devoted to God. God would allow them to keep the plunder from subsequent cities, but this was a test of obedience, and an opportunity to acknowledge that all good gifts came from God. If nothing had happened to Achan, God's future commands would be ignored.
