Jericho was the first city that was conquered, and was symbolic of the "first fruits," which was to be completely devoted to God. God would allow them to keep the plunder from subsequent cities, but this was a test of obedience, and an opportunity to acknowledge that all good gifts came from God.

I am amazed that out of hundreds of thousands of troops, only ONE disobeyed the ban.

God had to make an example of Achan, to nip this sort of rebellion in the bud. If nothing had happened to Achan, God's future commands would be ignored.
