God is a lot like us or should I say we are a lot like him. He thinks and once his thoughts are solidified he speaks. He feels and is reception of all of the accolades we can bestow on him just like we are happy and overwhelmed when we are honored for some act accomplished. He is oftentimes saddened through people’s rejection of his Son like we become disappointed when one of our children gets out of line. 

He is oftentimes happy, like when Jesus was born because he knew reconciliation and or the redemptive process was going to finally take place i.e., like we are happy when we give birth. He never sleeps only by choice. He hates wrong and he despises wickedness just like we despise when some injustice is done to us or someone we love. He is full of compassion, just like us we become when catastrophic or disastrous acts hit our country. God is not easily provoked to anger, he is forgiving, and he has a great since of humor. He can even be sarcastic. God is a lot like us but on a higher echelon in his thoughts and ways.

The best way to discover God is to find Jesus. In Hebrews 1:3 the bible says "The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the majesty in heaven."

Jesus himself said "If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him" (John 14:7). "...Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father..." (John 14:9). "Don't you believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work" (John 14:10). Every thought, every word, every deed recorded in the gospel books about the human life of Jesus, reveals something important about God.

In fact, every part of the bible is written to tell us (speak directly) or illustrate (show by example) or illuminate (show by a picture) what God is like. Over the years I have used a book called "Celebration of Praise" by Dick Eastman, to help me focus my daily worship time with God. The book uses words and bible references to describe the nature and character of God. Following are some references from this book to help us discover what God is like.

The Nature of God:
Complexity (Isaiah 9:6-7), Eternity (Revelation 1:8), Incarnation (Hebrew 1:3), Infinity (Psalm 90:1,2,4), Immensity (1 Kings 8:27), Immutability (Hebrew 13:8; James 1:17), Reality (John 17:3), Self-sufficiency (Psalm 72:1-20), Simplicity (Psalm 78:1-8), Totality (2 Samuel 22:31-37), Unity (John 17:21-23).

The Character of God:

If we really want to know what God is like, here is an approach to consider. Select one attribute listed above per day, or per week, and meditate on it throughout the day. Review the referenced bible verses and ask the Holy Spirit to give us his favourite verses that speak to each attribute. Then as other verses come to mind, look them up and meditate on them throughout the day.
