When Israel left God and his ways, they came under enemy control by that action alone, becoming subject to being taken over. God didn't have to do anything about it. When you leave his circle of protection - you are no longer in his circle of protection. It's that simple. It's just a matter of how long it takes the enemy to realize the extent of the vulnerability.
