The story of Zacchaeus is found in Luke chapter 19 verses 1 - 10. 

Jesus had traveled through Jericho. Zacchaeus was the chief tax collector. He was a man we might call"vertically challenged." He had heard of Jesus and that He would be coming into the area. The crowds were thick, and Zacchaeus could not see. He climbed a large tree, so he could catch a glimpse of Jesus.

Jesus saw Zacchaeus, "Zacchaeus, make haste and come down, for today I must stay at your house." Zacchaeus was filled with joy. The crowd was angry that Jesus would choose to commune with a person like him. He was after all, a tax collector. See Luke 5:30,"And the scribes and the Pharisees complained against the disciples, saying, "Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?"

Again in Luke 15:2, "And the Pharasees and scribes complained, saying, "This Man receives sinners and eats with them." 

Verse 8 of Luke 19, is revealing. ZACCHAEUS confesses that he was not always honest in his work.. There were laws to be respected. Extortion and restitution are addressed in Leviticus 5:16, And Numbers 5:7.

Jesus said to him (verse 9 of Luke 19) "Today salvation has come to this house, because he also is a son of Abraham; for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost."

Matthew 18:11, "For the Son of Man has come to save that which was lost."

Luke 9:56, "For the Son of Man did not come to destroy men's lives but to save them."

This term, the Son of Man, refers to Him representing man. It implies that His coming is for all people of every nation for every age. It also tells us that to Him is committed universal judgement. He is the fulfillment of the O.T. -Genesis 1:26, Genesis 3:15, Psalm 8:4, Isaiah 7:14, and Isaiah 32:2 to name a few verses.
