What does the Bible say about professionalism?

The word "Professionalism" does not appear in the Bible. However, there are times we must look at the "spirit" or the meaning behind the word. What does Professionalism mean anyway? According to Webster's it means: the competence or skill expected of a professional, or the practicing of an activity, especially a sport, by professional rather than amateur players. Well now, in this light Professionalism takes on a new meaning. How can I be a Professional Christian? I really do not want to be an amateur player Christian. This requires some further digging! In 2 Tim 2:15 we are to study to become this approved (Professional) Christian. We are to put on the Whole Armor of God and become Warriors Eph 6:11,13, Rom 13:12, Col 3:12, Eph 6:12, 2 Cor 10:3 We are also admonished to do everything, Cheerfully, as unto the LORD! Col 3:23-24 If we back up to Col 3:22, we see Apostle Paul instructing the Servants to OBEY their Masters. Since we loudly and proudly proclaim the LORD Jesus Christ to be the KING of All Kings and LORD of ALL Lords.. Is He not our Master? Are we not His Servants? Professionalism: the competence or skill expected of a professional, or the practicing of an activity, especially a sport, by professional rather than amateur players. Personally, this has revealed that I can do much better! I can be a much better Professional Servant of my Master the LORD Jesus Christ! Be Blessed, Lena

To me, the main teaching on this subject is found in Ephesians 6:5-8: "Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ. Obey them not only to win their favor when their eye is on you, but as slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from your heart. Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not people, because you know that the Lord will reward each one for whatever good they do, whether they are slave or free." Although Paul is addressing slaves in this passage, I think that the same principle would apply to all of us in our working lives. We are to conduct ourselves at all times as if we were rendering service to God Himself, rather than merely to our human superiors. Displaying this attitude in our work would, in my opinion, cause us to exhibit all the attributes that comprise professionalism, including the following (which are spoken of favorably in other passages of Scripture as well): Neatness of appearance Reliability Confident demeanor Competence Ethical behavior Courtesy Accountability.
