Since Jesus is a person of the one triune God, He has always existed. And, since (as Jesus said in John 4:24), God is spirit, prior to His conception as a human in Mary's womb through the working of both the Father and the Holy Spirit (Luke 1:35), He was in spiritual form in heaven. 

After His incarnation, life, death, and resurrection, He returned to heaven in His glorified, resurrected body (rather than resuming His pre-incarnate form as a purely spiritual Being), but still omnipresent and infinite.

I encourage everyone to read and study Luke 24. Christ's pre-existence is so wonderfully and beautifully proclaimed. It also attests to His sovereign power to impart spiritual understanding, the prerequisite to saving faith.

As Cleopas and an unnamed disciple were walking along the Emmaus Road discussing the recent events, our resurrected Lord appeared and joined with them. (Luke 24:13-15). V. 16 states: "But their eyes were holden that they should not know him." 
(Slightly off topic but V.16 adds new light to Luke 10:22 " All things are delivered to me of my Father: and no man knoweth who the Son is, but the Father; and who the Father is, but the Son, and he to whom the Son will reveal him.")

I believe Luke 24:27 is especially significant to the question. "And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself."

After the Emmaus Road experience, his stop over at the village where he blessed and broke bread, he then vanished and returned to Jerusalem.

Appearing to the eleven and others present : "And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me. Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures," (Luke 24:44)

Moses, the prophets, the Psalms? Wow! This is the WHOLE of the Old Testament! Our Lord was very active in the Old Testament record. Yes, I too believe he was Spirit but at times blessed certain ones with a physical manifestation.

In Hebrews 10 :7 the writer essentially quoted Psalms 40:7 "Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God."

"Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created." (Revelation 4:11)

Proverbs 8:22 says "The LORD possessed or fathered me at the beginning of his works, the first of His acts of old. 23. Ages ago I was setup, at the first, before the beginning of the earth. 24.when there were no depths I was brought forth, when there were no springs abounding with water." Read on upto 31.

Again john 8:58 Jesus said to them, Truly, Truly, I say to you, before Abraham was I AM." John 1:1 also declares Jesus from the beginning.

Good answers, all. My answer is quite simple. Being omnipresent, He was everywhere! 

He was in the blood of the lamb on the Door post at passover. He was in the scarlet thread of Rahab. He was in almost every book of the Bible. But He was also in creation. He said (paraphrased) ", if you deny who I am even the stones will cry out!" And He was in heaven. Yes, everywhere.

John 1:1-2 says- In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. To me this means that Jesus is God and would therefore have been omnipresent before God the Father placed him in Mary's womb, and his omnipresence would by necessity have been put on hold while he served God as God incarnate here on earth.

The pre-existence of Christ is an amazing and glorious revelation. Christ, being the very Image of the Almighty was indeed very active before becoming flesh on earth. Two things that are very important is that Christ was the Word of God and that Christ was the Express image of God(Col 1:15 and Heb 1:3). Gen 1:26...”God said let us make man in our Image” When we think in terms of Image we think of the Visble as opposed to invisible. So the Invisible God Has a visible Image who is the Word of God Jesus Christ (there is the visible image of God and the moral image of God both are true). 1Tim 6:16 
The Father can never be seen nor approached by mankind except of course Jesus Christ the Son of God. So having established that the Eternal Father is invisible and that He is also Omnipresent, we should understand that God was seen in the Old testament. When Moses was at the burning bush he saw God. He saw the Angel of Jehovah, who was the Theophany, the visible appearance of Christ the Son of God. How can we know that Moses was talking to the pre-existant Christ at the burning bush? We find in 1Cor 10:4... Right there it says Christ followed the Israelites at this point of time in the wilderness. Now looking at the context the OT setting was at the Red Sea as we see the apostle spoke of that crossing as being a type of Baptism in water. So understanding that let’s go to Exodus 14:19-24... Firstly we note that The Angel of Jehovah went to the back of the Israelites in the pillar of cloud and stood behind them. Then early in the morning it tells us that the LORD (Yhwh) looked at the Egyptians through that pillar of cloud. This was proof that Jesus Christ was in that cloud and that He was also refered to in His divinity as Yhwh. 
Another place where we see the Angel of Jehovah, among many other OT portions of Scripture referred to as being God, is in the book of Judges 2:1...Here the Angel of Jehovah visits Israel and declares 
And an angel of the LORD came up from Gilgal to Bochim, and said, I made you to go up out of Egypt, and have brought you unto the land which I sware unto your fathers; and I said, I will never break my covenant with you.

The Angel of Jehovah is saying He brought them out of Egypt and it was His covenant that He promised never to break with them. Some have suggested that the Angel is speaking as the voice of Jehovah and not actually Jehovah but in the same book of Judges it’s not only spoken voice it’s it’s His personal presence. Let me explain. Jdg 6:11... The Angel of Jehovah appears to Gideon. Then the Angel commissions him to save Israel. We shall pick up the conversation in Jdg 6:16... The Angel now is speaking as Jehovah, “and the LORD(Yhwh, Hashem) said unto him” Jdg 6:16 And Jehovah said to him, Surely, I will be with you, and you shall strike the Midianites as one man.
Jdg 6:17 And he said to Him, If now I have found grace in Your sight, then show me a sign that You talk with me.
Jdg 6:18 

The point I’m making here is that Jehovah is telling Gideon that He Himself will wait under that oak tree. No doubt this is the second person of the trinity, Jesus Christ that is waiting under the tree. The Word of God manifesting Himself as the very Image of the Invisible God. So then not just God speaking but revealing His personal presence. That is why it is said of Moses 
Num 14:14 
We have read previously that no person can or will ever see God. Normally this would make you wonder as you see that the Scriptures say Moses saw God and all the patriarchs He appeared to them. Of course we can understand it when we see that God manifested Himself in the Old and New Testaments as the Angel of Jehovah and the Word made flesh. We see the sun arise every clear day and that is possible because we are far away from it but if we should suddenly appear in the core of the sun you know what would happen. So it is with the Appearance of YHWH in the Bible. Jesus was active and appearing in the OT
