In a word, Judaism; it was like Judaism then more than now, but it's still a lot like Judaism. Even the best teachers of the grace of God, that grace that sustains us in every area of life, most importantly for our redemption, will often speak out of both sides of their mouth to say that God rewards good behavior and punishes the bad. While that is true, it's only true sometimes. Not all good behavior is openly rewarded, and not all bad behavior receives open rebuke.

Judaism taught that the way to please God was to keep his commandments. There are christians who teach that today. God never said he'd be pleased if Israel kept his commandments. He only said that keeping his commandments would make their way prosperous. It was what it would do for them, not what pleasure he would receive.

Early Christianity was a lot like Christianity now. The things that Paul warned the church about then are still problems for the church now. I don't know of anything that troubled the church then that doesn't still trouble the church.

If there's a difference in Christianity now as opposed to two thousand years ago I don't know what it is.
