What does it mean when God says He will "visit the iniquity of the fathers on the children and grandchildren to the third and fourth generations"?

Exodus 34:7

NIV - 7 Maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children and their children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation.

Our world is proof that every generation has fallen further away from God and his truths. Unfortunately God the Father and Jesus Christ seem to be the last thing the majority of the world want. So They have no choice but to let people follow their sinful ways. I believe that every generation that rejects God gives the following generation less hope in finding God or the Faith they need to even call out to him. God wrote the commandments according to the importance of them in His eyes. Number (1) You shall have no other gods before me. Love only God. WoW! are we in trouble!
