A mother is challenged to raise up her children to become independent. When they take on a spouse she is to not feel threatened that she is being replaced. Look back to what the mother learned. Was she bullied as a new bride? She needs to be lovingly reminded that you appreciate all she has done for your spouse in raising him. Now that you are married it is your spouse and you that are working to establish a new family. Assure her she is an important part of that union. The family will flourish when ground rules are in place. As long as they are not clear the boundaries are easy to push. Thank her for her input and remind her that you and your spouse will consider her opinion, but all decisions are made by the two of you. One day you may be that mother in law. Treat her the way you would want to be treated. KN
