Why did Sukkoth refuse Gideon's request for bread in Judges chapter 8?

Judges 8:4 - 7

ESV - 4 And Gideon came to the Jordan and crossed over, he and the 300 men who were with him, exhausted yet pursuing. 5 So he said to the men of Succoth, "Please give loaves of bread to the people who follow me, for they are exhausted, and I am pursuing after Zebah and Zalmunna, the kings of Midian.

In Genesis 32:23-28 Jacob wrestles with God. God changes his name to Israel. This is also recorded in Genesis 35:10 "And God said unto him, your name is Jacob, your name shall not be called any more Jacob, but Israel shall be your name: and he shall be called Israel." Jacob showed his strength to God and God proved HE was the hope of Israel.

Genesis 48 we have the story of Joseph presenting his sons to Israel(Jacob). The twelve tribes come from the family line of Jacob. Vs.8,9 "Israel beheld Joseph's sons and said who are these? And Joseph said unto his father these are my son's....(Jacob) bring them unto me and I will bless them." Now we all know, the blessings a very serious thing!

Jacob proceeded to bless. But gave the bigger portion of the blessing to Ephraim, the younger son. Genesis 48:17. The older is usually given the greater portion of the blessing. Manassah also was blessed. Jacob did as he was instructed by the Holy Spirit to do.

Judges 6:1 "And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord; and the Lord delivered them into the hand of Midian seven years" v6,7 "And it came to pass when the children of Israel cried unto the Lord because of the Midianites" Judges 6:11 Gideon thrashed wheat by the wine press to hide it from the Midianites...v12 And the angel of the Lord appeared to him, the Lord is with you, you mighty man of valour...vs15 (Gideon) behold my family is poor in Manasseh and I am the least in my father's house." (A H A from the 1/2 tribe)

Judges 7, The Lord organizes Gideon' s army to fight the Midianites. Vs. 25, they took two princes of the Midianites. This is celebrated in Psalm 83:11.

Judges 8:1 The men of Ephriam are upset that they were not asked to join Gideon' s army. 8:5 Gideon asks for bread and is refused vs.6. Remember God chose Gideon' s army!

I believe they were petty and jealous. I believe it probably goes all the way back to the blessing of Ephraim and Manasseh. Do we ever learn, let us accept our part, do the Lord's will and stop all the pettiness! Amen!
