What does it mean that God has granted us 'everything we need for life and godliness?'

Do we have everything we need for life and godliness?

2 Peter 1:3

NLT - 3 By his divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. We have received all of this by coming to know him, the one who called us to himself by means of his marvelous glory and excellence.

The way that I received that verse, is that we have been given all of the answers to life & godliness through the Holy Spirit who dwells in us. So, God has given us ALL of the answers concerning life on this earth, & ALL of the answers concerning living a godly lifestyle that we will EVER need. We just have to seek the answers through prayer & meditation through the Holy Spirit that lives & works within us. That is the way that I received that verse.

Personally I think this verse is talking about the things that our God has given to us who are in Christ. By His power he has given us everything we need to live the godly life God assigned for us. The Message Bible puts it this way: 2 Peter 1:3 "Everything that goes into a life of pleasing God has been miraculously given to us by getting to know, personally and intimately, the One who invited us to God. The best invitation we ever received!"

The Psalmist said in Psalm 23:1 "The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want [I have everything I need].

So believers are not to " beg" from God what they already have. For example we have salvation, peace from Christ himself, joy, His Word; all this things are given to us...through the [personal and intimate] knowledge of Him who called us by his own glory and goodness.

Does it therefore mean we should not ask anything from God? Not at all! This verse is simply telling us that as heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, God has designed many things for us. We only need to RECEIVE them in prayers, studying the Word and by the Holy Spirit. We need to depend on God fully for everything we need, yet we also need to know that He delightedly gave us the prerequisites to live the life that will please Him. We need to log in to it.

The Christian life begins with saving faith, faith in the person of Jesus Christ. But when you know Jesus Christ personally, you also experience God’s power, and this power produces “life and godliness.” The unsaved sinner is dead (Eph. 2:1–3), and only Christ can raise him from the dead (John 5:24). When Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead, He said, “Loose him, and let him go” (John 11:44). Get rid of the graveclothes!

When you are born into the family of God by faith in Christ, you are born complete. God gives you everything you will ever need “for life and godliness.” Nothing has to be added! “And ye are complete in him” (Col. 2:10). The false teachers claimed that they had a “special doctrine” that would add something to the lives of Peter’s readers, but Peter knew that nothing could be added. Just as a normal baby is born with all the “equipment” he needs for life and only needs to grow, so the Christian has all that is needed and only needs to grow. God never has to call back/recall (request the return of faulty goods) any of His “models” because something is lacking or faulty.

2 Peter 1:3
For as you know him better, he will give you, through his great power, everything you need for living a truly good life: he even shares his own glory and his own goodness with us!

He has by his own action given us everything that is necessary for living the truly good life, in allowing us to know the one who has called us to him, through his own glorious goodness.
