The identity of Clement is not known, but starting in the 3rd or 4th century, it became traditional to associate this reference to Pope Clement I. However, this is somewhat speculative and not conclusive.

Surely Clement here is 'Clement of Rome'. He was a godly man who wrote extensively of the times of the apostles. You can download his major work 'Recognitions of Clement', free from various internet sites.

His name means "kind" or "tolerant. "He was a Christian of Philippi who worked with Paul (Phil. 4:3). Conceivably the biblical dad with a similar name (Clement of Rome). He is mentioned nowhere else in the New Testament.
