Balaam was a sorcerer in Biblical times. The book of Numbers in the Old Testament (see chapter 22) contains the account of the Moabite King Balak summoning Balaam for the purpose of cursing the Israelites for the benefit of the Moabites. Although Balaam refused to curse them directly, knowing that God was with them, he offered Balak advice as to how to entice them into sin, which resulted in God having to resist them on account of their disobedience.
