Why did Elijah kill the prophets of Baal?

Was this due to religious intolerance?

1 Kings 18:40

ESV - 40 And Elijah said to them, "Seize the prophets of Baal; let not one of them escape." And they seized them. And Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon and slaughtered them there.

After a brief discussion with a church member who claimed God wouldn't give such a murderous command according to his view of God as a loving and "all inclusive" God. This seems to represent the liberal interpretation of today's God. But of course-God doesn't change and is holy and just. He required sacrifices for sins. It was a messy & stinky process, blood and burning flesh. But , I guess if you're going to read the Bible with a pair of scissors handy, you can make it affirm what you want.
