What is Corban?
► Corban is, all that I can spare of material things is dedicated to God and I cannot help my parents.

How do they evade law by Corban?
► Children who did not want to support parents used this tradition (Corban) as an excuse to evade the law. They would enter into a deal with a corrupt priest for a small percent to dedicate things to God which should go to parents. They then could claim them to be God's and not their own. Thus they would be free from any obligation to parents. Mt. 15:5.

Corban is a Hebrew word meaning `that which brought near or a gift or offering to God’. Mark preserves the Hebrew word for a gift or offering (Ex.21:17, Lev.20:9). Moses had clearly told the Israelite to honor their parents. But the Pharisees negated and wrongly interpreted this, saying that instead of helping their parents, the money that could be utilized for helping parents could instead be offered to the Temple for charity purposes. They said it was as good as helping parents. This is ridiculous. Jesus told the Pharisees that they were misusing the idea of Corban. This is one example how God’s laws were twisted by giving priority to ma- made religious tradition.

Rituals have no meaning if we do not have a personal relationship with God. Rituals or charity without a reality have no meaning at all. The Bible says to honor your parents so that you will be blessed.(Ex.20:12).

Today many people ignore their parents during their old age. Many of them abandon their parents in old age homes. Protecting the parents in their old age is one’s duty (Ex.20:12). In India, it is a crime if we do not protect the parents during their old age.
