This was a perversion of the practice of earmarking finances for the temple, and not for personal reasons. Some Jews would sidestep their responsibility to care for their parents (note context of the verse). The Law told them to care for their parents, yet they called their finances "Corban" in order to avoid that, under the guise of being spiritual.
