A man planted by the rivers of water is likened to a man who has regular suply of nourishment and refreshment. From the context of psalm 1:1-3..this is a man who steers clear of the life style of the ungodly. He is said to be a blessed man. The source of his blessings is the word of God. He has an insatiable hunger for the word of God. He meditates on the word day and night and applies the word to his life....what can be more nourishing and refreshing than the word of God? This kind of man shall prosper in everything he undertakes because he is living in fellowship with the Lord, and all his words and actions are guided by the Holy Spirit.

First, I can say that we see a general outline of the passage:
• Psalm 1
• 2. The Person Who Is a Blessing (v. 3).
• 3. The Person Who Needs a Blessing (vv. 4-6). – Dr. Warren W. Wiersbe

A more specific outline would be :
The Godly Man (Psalm 1):
1 His Purity—He ‘walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly’ v.1
2 His Progress—Three negatives and two positives v.1,2
3 His Piety—Delights in, and meditates on, God’s Law v.2

4 His Position—‘Planted by the rivers of water’ v.3 -- The author compares the godly individual to a tree that has a rich water supply (planted by flowing streams), develops a strong root system, and is filled with leaves and fruit. Just as a tree soaks up water and bears luscious fruit, we also are to soak up God's word, producing actions and attitudes that honor God. To achieve anything worthwhile, we must have God's word in our hearts.

The simile suggests that the godly have a continual source of life which in turn produces stability and uninterrupted prosperity.

5 His Prosperity—Whatever he does prospers v.3
Contrast the Ungodly—Like the chaff: Three Negatives—not so, not able to stand in the judgment, not in the congregation of the righteous.

"Rivers" or "river" in Psalm 1:3 KJV is 1 of 8 Hebrew words for "RIVER":
River [EBD]--that is, according to Easton's Bible Dictionary--in Hebrew (Peleg), properly "waters divided", i.e., streams divided, throughout the land (Psalm 1:3); "the rivers [i.e., 'divisions'] of waters" (Job 20:17; 29:6; Proverbs 5:16).

Try to get Warren Wiersbe Commentary on the Old Testament from your local public library for a fuller explanation of Psalm 1:3.

(The Wiersbe Bible Commentary: OT, the complete old testament in one volume) more properly. I check this out all the time.) "The most important part of a tree is the hidden root system that draws up water and nourishment, and the most important part of the believer’s life is the 'spiritual root system' that draws on the hidden resources we have in Christ (Eph. 3:17; Col. 2:7). This is known as 'abiding in Christ' (John 15:1-9)." --Warren Wiersbe

Blessings!

==>Holiness and righteousness is the key to be planted by the rivers of waters

Psalm 1:3: And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

The dreamer who was sold to the Ishmaelites (Gen 37) was planted by the rivers of water in Egypt, (Gen 45:5) and the Lord was with him and made all that he did to prosper in his hand. For he found grace, which led blessings of the Lord upon all that was around him in the house and in the field. (Gen 39:1-4) Being planted to be the overseer of the house brought forth his fruit in his season, thus they came out as the Lord promised with great substance out of Egypt. (Gen 15:14)

Being planted by the will of God, one may go through trials and temptations, just as the dreamer was caught by his garments to be tested, and he left behind his garment. Being touched by an unclean thing hidden from him though living in the house (Gen 39:8) led him to be unclean and guilty, thus he left his garment behind (Lev 5:2) and was put in prison to bear more fruits. (Gen 39:20)

To be a tree planted by the rivers of water, no one can do it on his own, for as the Lord promised to bring them back unto a land flowing with milk and honey (Exo 3:8), it is in the Father's hand to draw you close to Him through His son, the Lord Jesus. (John 6:44) Thus being brought into the land of Egypt to eat the fat of the Land (Gen 45:18), God's people took the promises of the Land as with great substances as Abram was promised.

Genesis 45:5: Now therefore be not grieved, nor angry with yourself, that ye sold me hither: for God did send me before you to preserve life (the words of Joseph to his brothers).
