According to Strong's concordance the term familiar spirit is used exclusively in the Old Testament and defined as:

water skin bottle

necromancer

necromancer, one who evokes the dead

practice of necromancy

one that has a familiar spirit

For one to be oppressed by a familiar spirit(s) would imply spirits of the departed are involved. This would be "haunting", mysticism. I believe you would be well advised to stay clear away from someone or group that is involved in this teaching or practice. If not the Holy Spirit there is only one other option. Demonic.
