Genesis 17:4-8

Abraham and the Covenant of Circumcision

⁴ "Behold, my covenant is with you, and you shall be _q the father of a multitude of nations. ⁵ No longer shall your name be called Abram, ₁ but _r your name shall be Abraham, _{2 s} for I have made you the father of a multitude of nations. ⁶ I will make you exceedingly fruitful, and I will make _t you into nations, and _u kings shall come from you. ⁷ And I will _v establish my covenant between me and you and your offspring after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, _w to be God to you and to your offspring after you. ⁸ And _x I will give to you and to your offspring after you the land of your sojournings, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession, and _y I will be their God."

   He received the sign of circumcision as a seal of the righteousness that he had by faith while he was still uncircumcised. The purpose was to make him the father of all who believe without being circumcised, so that righteousness would be counted to them as well.
