Question: "Why was God so forgiving of David for his many sins?"

Because David acknowledged his sin and repented.
Psalms 51:1 [To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David, when Nathan the prophet came unto him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba.]] Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions."
v.2 "Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin."
v.3 "For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me."
v. 4 "Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest."

Psalms 34:18 " The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit."

Psalms 51:17 " The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise."
Isaiah 57:15 "For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones."

This same mercy and grace extends to "ALL" believers. "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1John 1:9).

Because David is a great example of the long suffering and forgiveness of God. Faith is what God accounts as righteousness to anyone who believes. If God would not forgive David of his many sins, then who will he forgive? No man can boast that he has earned Gods forgiveness. (Eph 2:8-9)
