Dear Sammie, Your question is so interesting because it interweaves many layers of Truths. First, you must understand that the Children of Israel were commanded to drive out and destroy the inhabitants of Canaan's Land. 

However, this was not the first time their ancestors had encountered them. In Gen 13:7, Abram had to deal with friction between the inhabitants of the Land. Even though God had promised this land to him, he still was not able to overcome them by himself. (Gen 15:20) Jacob was afraid of them, and was running scared of them in Gen 34:30. 

Yet God did not forget His promise to Abraham. In Ex 3:8 and Ex 3:17 by His mighty strength God delivered a massive army out of Egypt to go to Canaan's Land to deal with these tribes that had seeped in idolatry for hundreds of years and caused a stench in God's nostrils. 

Deu 7:1 When the LORD thy God shall bring thee into the land whither thou goest to possess it, and hath cast out many nations before thee, the Hittites, and the Girgashites, and the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, seven nations greater and mightier than thou; 

Deu 7:2 And when the LORD thy God shall deliver them before thee; thou shalt smite them, and utterly destroy them; thou shalt make no covenant with them, nor shew mercy unto them: 

Each of the tribes had different characteristics that reflect in us, things that God wants to bring out of us as we grow becoming mature Christians:

Hittites-- terror, fear, breaking down others
Girgashites --- constantly building on own ideas
Amorites --- to boast ones self, to challenge, to speak against
Canaanites --- to peddle, to trade, to gossip
Perizzites --- to dwell in open country, no walled cities, don't fence me in with rules or regulations
Hivites --- to live, to declare, to show, can make life within self have no need of God Almighty
Jebusites --- trample, loath, pollute, trample on God's divine Will and Purpose for our life, and loath what He has given to us

If we are honest with ourselves, we all have some of these characters lurking in us. Only honest confession and true repentance will rid us of them and bring the victory through the Blood of Jesus Christ! Bless His Holy Name!
