Another way to ask that would be; "What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound?" (Romans 6:1)

Follow by Paul’s answer in Romans 6:2-15

Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it? Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection, knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. For he who has died has been freed from sin. Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him, knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no longer has dominion over Him. For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God. Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Paul goes on to say, "But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from the heart … And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness."

What Paul is saying is that when one becomes a believer he/she has a different hearts attitude. Being set free from sin, no longer its slave, having received God’s gift of eternal life, the hearts desire in love and thankfulness now desires to do God’s will (Heb. 13:21), "which is your reasonable service". (Rom. 12:1)

Rom. 13:14 "But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts." Christ in a believer has power over sin!

Peter states; "that he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh for the lusts of men, but for the will of God. For we have spent enough of our past lifetime in doing the will of the Gentiles—when we walked in lewdness, lusts, drunkenness, revelries, drinking parties, and abominable idolatries. " (1 Pet. 4:2-3)

Because sin, ALL sin, big or small, is a rebellious act AGAINST God!

Jesus said to the adulterous woman... when no one was sinLESS enough to cast the first stone:

"Now go and sin no more."

That is God telling her not to sin anymore. He didn't say, go ahead and continue to sin, but believe in me and daily, repent of your sins. He said point blank "GO AND SIN NO MORE."

While we have God's grace, and the forgiveness of God due to Jesus' sacrifice for US, many Christians (I believe) feel as you do that they are covered by grace and can continue to live in willful sin and still be saved and... there are several discussions on this with differing points of view. Many fellow Christians on ebible.com believe no matter WHAT you are saved even IF you sin. I do not necessarily agree. If you repent of your sin, Jesus will forgive that sin, but to continue in a life of willful sinning, whether it be smoking, drugs, alcohol, fornication, pornography, profanity, gluttony, etc.... these are of the world, not of the Holy Spirit, and sure, we can repent of our sins, but to go and continue to sin the next day... NOT how it works! That is why Jesus said:

"Depart from me for I knew you not." to those who said they had prophesized in His name, cast out demons in His name, done many good works in His name... but the rest of the time what were they doing? Not living for Christ obviously!

We are called to live FOR Christ once saved. It is not about US anymore, it is ALL about Him. That is why 'the old man is dead' once we are saved for we are made to be a new creation IN Christ once saved. If we turn away from that salvation, continue to sin, day by day, bit by bit (MY opinion here not necessarily agreed upon by others here) the Holy Spirit WILL leave you to your own devices. Sinlessness is next to impossible for we are wicked flawed individuals, but we have to TRY nonetheless, and continue to work towards that ultimate goal of perfection in Christ, as perfect as Christ WAS/IS!

Sin is utterly offensive to God and a rebellious act no matter what level of 'sin' you estimate it to be. PERIOD.

And in my humble opinion, that's why. :)

I agree with you all. My dilemma is that all of my life I have been taught the law was nailed to the cross.
We'll if Christ did away with the law then I can't sin. 
The bible says in the New Testament that SIN is the TRANGRESSION of the LAW.
Where there is no law there is no sin. This is why Jesus put us under the Grace dispensation so that sin no longer could stop us, so the law had to go.

Please read Romans 6 and that should answer your question. In my small way I would like to put it in a simple way. The law has always been in place and as long as you are obedient you not not under the law, but when you sin or break the law then you are under the law. Grace(forgiveness) is then given to you but if you do not change your ways(repent) and continue sinning you will be back under the law.

I will use The apostle Peter as an example to answer your question: 

On the day that Jesus was arrested, Peter was asked three times if he was a follower of Jesus. He denied knowing Jesus all three times. Jesus warned Peter that this would happen, but Peter did not believe him. Peter lied about his faith, denied the Lord, sinned, and wound up heartbroken because of his actions and because of Jesus' death on the cross. 

After his resurrection, Jesus came to Peter and asked him three times if Peter loved him. Peter said yes all three times. Peter's heart was always with Jesus and pointing toward his teachings, even though he sinned. 

So, the answer to your question is that we still sin because we are human, but when we are baptized in the holy spirit by becoming followers of Christ and accepting him as savior we set our hearts and minds on His ways and not our own. Sin then loses its power if we do what Christ says and repent and confess our sins to him. 

We can, and do, still sin as Christians, but as followers of Jesus we should always strive to follow his example and teachings. When we fall down, he is faithful to forgive and quick to save if we come back to him and seek forgiveness.

The Letter on James is filled with wisdom on how to navigate this world. However when reading we must remember that James was writing to Jewish Christians who considered themselves to be under law, not grace. But James1:22 says,"But you must do what the Word tells you and not just listen to it and deceive yourselves." 


Remember GRACE means there is nothing we can DO to earn eternal life!
Paul who writes to gentiles says in Galations 5:1-5 "Christ set us free,so that we should remain free. Stand firm then, and do not let yourselves be fastened to the yoke of slavery. I Paul, give you my word that if you accept circumcision Christ will be of no benefit to you at all. I give my assurance once again to every man who accepts circumcision that he is under obligation to keep the whole Law. Once you seek to be reckoned as upright under the Law, then you have separated yourself from Christ, you have fallen away from GRACE. We live in the age of Grace! 

1st Samuel 2:30....
God of Israel declares....those who honor I honor in my turn, and those who despise me will be an object of contempt.... In the book of Galations in the N.T. 5:13 After all brothers you were called to be free... do not use your freedom as an opening for self indulgence...5:16...be guided by the Spirit...
5:18...when self-indulgence is at work the results are obvious...5:21 people who behave in these ways will not inherit the kingdom of God--5:25since we are living by the Spirit let our behavior be guided by the Spirit. 

As believers we should be spirit filled. I think we must remember God sees and knows all. He looks at our heart for our faith. That faith seeks to please Him..Proverbs 28:18 Whosoever walks rightly shall be saved, but he that is perverse in his ways shall fall at once.
