Of the 19 kings of Judah, Josiah was the last of the good kings and one of the four (with Asa, Jehoshaphat, and Hezekiah) who were of the caliber of David.

The young king ascended the throne at 8 years of age, but he decided to do right, and he was consistent, II Chronicles 34:1, 2.

His reign is marked by notable events much of when he was young. The Bible clearly marks the years of his reign when these events happened.

Eighth Year: II Chronicles 34:3a
He began to seek the God of his father David. He was 16 years of age.

Twelfth Year: II Chronicles 34:3b-7
He began to purge Judah and Jerusalem of high places, all images and altars to cleanse and purge Judah and Jerusalem, as well as cities in the far reaches of Israel. He was 20 years old.

Eighteenth Year: II Chronicles 34:8-35:19
At age 26, several great events happened.

First, he directed the repair of the house of the Lord.

This led to the finding by Hilkiah the priest the ‘Book of the Law,’ which is probably Deuteronomy 27-30, which contains the exact title. It was read to the king who tore his clothes in response to it.

This led to Josiah to inquire of the Lord about the wrath of the Lord. The officials went to the prophetess Huldah who confirmed the Lord was going to bring calamity, but Josiah would not see it because his heart was tender, and he had humbled himself before God.

This in turn led to the reading of the book before all the people who made a covenant before the Lord to keep His commandments. The abominations from the whole country were removed and the people did not depart from following the Lord all his days.

This then led to the observance of the Passover which was unlike any Passover since the days of Samuel.

Thirty-first Year: II Chronicles 35:20-24
At the age of 39, Josiah, known for his consistency, was sidetracked when Necho, pharaoh of Egypt was passing through Israel to fight against Carchemish on the Euphrates. Necho warned him to “refrain from meddling with God” who was with him lest God destroy him. Josiah did not heed and even disguised himself to fight. Disguises never helped a king as Ahab found out, I Kings 22:30-37. Josiah was wounded and taken to Jerusalem where he died. He was the only king of Judah to die in battle.

An old saying goes, “Don’t interfere with something that ain’t bothering you none.” Proverbs 26:17 also comments on meddling. Josiah was needlessly reckless and succumbed to pride which led to disobedience. Some wonder if he mistook the promise of God to be gathered to the grave in peace to act the way he did. However, God was promising him he would not see the wrath God intended for the land.

How tragically young he was when he died, all because after an exemplary life, he disobeyed the Lord.

Who was King Josiah in the Bible?

Josiah was a king of Judah from c. 640–609 BCE, known for his religious reforms and devotion to God. He became king at age eight and is remembered as one of the most righteous kings in Israel's history, initiating a major religious reformation after a Book of the Law was discovered in the Temple. His reforms included centralising worship in Jerusalem, destroying pagan idols, and restoring the Passover celebration.

1: Ascension and early reign: Josiah became king of Judah after his father, King Amon, was assassinated. He was only eight years old when he began his 31-year reign.

2: Discovery of the Law: In his eighteenth year of reign, he ordered the repair of the Temple. During this process, the high priest Hilkiah discovered the Book of the Law. When Josiah heard the contents, he was deeply disturbed by the people's disobedience and tore his clothes in grief.

3: Religious reforms: Josiah's reforms were extensive and included:

Reading the Book of the Law to all the people.

Making a covenant with God to follow his commands.

Destroying all idols and places of pagan worship throughout the land.

Cleansing the Temple of all foreign objects.

Restoring the celebration of the Passover.

Josiah became king of Judah when he was eight years old. In those days, people practised magic and worshipped idols. When Josiah was 16, he tried to learn how to worship God properly. When he was 20 years old, he began destroying the idols and altars throughout the land. And when Josiah was 26 years old, he had the Temple repaired.

In the Temple, the high priest Hilkiah found the scroll of God's Law, perhaps the very scroll written by Moses. The king's secretary, Shaphan, brought the scroll to Josiah and began reading the Law aloud.

When King Josiah heard the message, he went to the Temple and called the people of Judah together. Then he read God's Law out loud to the whole nation. Josiah and the people promised to obey God with all their hearts.

By this time, the nation of Judah had not celebrated the Passover for many years. But when Josiah read in the Law that the Passover should be celebrated every year, he told the nation, 'We will hold a Passover to our God.'"Then Josiah prepared to make many sacrifices and arranged to have a chorus of singers at the Temple.

The nation held the Passover, followed by the Festival of Unleavened Bread, which lasted for seven days. There had not been a Passover like it since the days of Samuel.

Conclusion:

Because Josiah was humble, Jehovah blessed him 2Ki 22:18-20.

Josiah was eager to please God 2Ki 22:1-5.

Like Josiah, we can gain God's favour when we humbly turn to him for guidance and admit our mistakes, correcting our path. --Jas 4:6.

Josiah is remembered in the Bible as a uniquely righteous king, praised for his total commitment to God's Law. His efforts to restore true worship left a powerful legacy of faith and obedience.
