“The Lord is my strength and my defense;
he has become my salvation.
He is my God, and I will praise him,
my father’s God, and I will exalt him. — Exodus 15:2

Glory in his holy name;

Nehemiah said, “Go and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks, and send some to those who have nothing prepared. This day is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.” — Nehemiah 8:10

Probably the most well-known preacher in England in the 1800s was Charles Spurgeon. My favorite quote from him is a nine-word sentence on humility. He said, "Be not proud of race, face, place or grace." I do not think that he was saying that we shouldn't have self-respect or self-esteem in each of these areas. However, there is no place for followers of the Lord to be arrogant in these areas. See Michael's comments on taking pride in our ability to save ourselves.

He gives strength to the weary
and increases the power of the weak.
Even youths grow tired and weary,
and young men stumble and fall;
but those who hope in the Lord
will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles;

he makes my feet like the feet of a deer,
he enables me to tread on the heights. — Habakkuk 3:19

One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, “Of all the commandments, which is the most important?” “The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’” — Mark 12:28-30
