The word parable comes from the Geek word; parabolē which literally means, 'putting things side by side'. A parabolē is a digression inserted to further explain a subject. Parables are closely related to a metaphor which is an extended allegory. Parables are a comparison between the spiritual principle being taught and an imaginary story that illustrates the intended principle. Jesus taught in parables for several reasons; the people he taught could not take notes because they were illiterate so parables provided them a story from their culture that they could relate to and so remember and correlate with the lesson Jesus was teaching them. Jesus spoke in parables, which are actual figures of speech like metaphors that further illustrate the point being taught and are fictitious in nature.
