Does God still hear me and work in my life when I'm wrestling with sin?

I've read that if we are sinning then God doesn't hear our prayers or intervene in our lives.  Since all have sinned, I don't know how God can tune us out and distance himself from us when we are wrestling with sin.  Who else but God can help us overcome the sins?  I can't be without sin all of the time and I need a full time God, not just one who tends to me when I'm without sin.
