The Pauline instruction in 1 Thessalonians 5:21,22 is conclusive:
Analyse — all things!
Accept — only good things!
Avoid — all questionable (evil) things! Amen!

Romans 1:29

First speaks of letting love be without HYPOCRISY (dissimulation). Thus the Christian's conduct towards fellow believers is to be a volitional caring for others, loving faithfully in spite of the response received. The love is to be genuine and not feigned.

ABHOR what is evil, cling to what is good. In other words DEPART from evil, and do good, seek peace, and purse it. (Psalm 34:14)

To abhor is to hate. As Christians we should hate all evil, and follow Christ's command to love as He loved us. In 1 Thes 5:22 we are told to "Abstain from every form of evil". But we must remember that it is not sinner, but the sin that must be hated. We must demonstrate love to all if we are to truly follow Christ.

1) My Definition of Abhor.

I am using the scriptures, alone, to help define abhor. I know the dictionary or a good Bible dictionary/commentary can define it, but I love letting the Word of God speak for Itself. So, here is my definition of abhor, with supporting scriptures. These are just a start. Besides these, I looked up several more, and quite a few give the sense that God means it when it is used in the Bible.

To abhor, is to hate or despise something or someone so much, that they should be turned against, or cast away.

2) First Uses

Exod 5:21 And they said unto them, The LORD look upon you, and judge; because ye have made our savour to be abhorred in the eyes of Pharaoh, and in the eyes of his servants, to put a sword in their hand to slay us.

Lev 20:23 And ye shall not walk in the manners of the nation, which I cast out before you: for they committed all these things, and therefore I abhorred them.

Lev 26:30 And I will destroy your high places, and cut down your images, and cast your carcases upon the carcases of your idols, and my soul shall abhor you.

Note the following verse, in particular:

Lev 26:43 The land also shall be left of them, and shall enjoy her sabbaths, while she lieth desolate without them: and they shall accept of the punishment of their iniquity: because, even because they despised my judgments, and because their soul abhorred my statutes.

• The Word of God equates "despise" with "abhorrence".

3) Repetition and Another use of Abhor, which help define it.

Deut 7:26 Neither shalt thou bring an abomination into thine house, lest thou be a cursed thing like it: but thou shalt utterly detest it, and thou shalt utterly abhor it; for it is a cursed thing.

Cursed is used twice in this one verse (Deut 7:26). Anytime a word or phrase is used more than once within a verse or passage, it is the Bible's way of emphasizing something. In this case, it emphasizes something "abhorred" is something "cursed".

Another word that is used more than once, is, "utterly".

Additionally, there are more equivalent terms to help define abhor. It is something considered to be an abomination, and something to be detested. Utterly detested.

4) To Turn Against

Job 19:19 All my inward friends abhorred me: and they whom I loved are turned against me.

This verse indicates that to abhor is to turn against.
