An Apologist is simply one who defends their beliefs of faith. 1Pet 3:15 states, "But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:). This is the directive for every Christian to be able to explain the basics of our faith, and to state why one believes what they do. One of the best known apologies is Paul's address on Mars' Hill. (Acts 17:16-34) Here we see that an apology is not making excuses but giving a clear logical explanation of the gospel.The word "apology" does not appear in the English translation of Scripture. It is taken from the Greek word 'apologia', which means: defense, answer or reply (of reason or accounting) Apologia is used in Acts 22:1; Php 1:7; 1: 17 to give context.

I'm guessing that you may be asking the question in terms of how we use the word today. Christian Apologetics is basically the philosophical side of Christian theology. Apologists defend Christianity against the objections of atheists and other religious people. Modern day apologists would be people like William Lane Craig (reasonablefaith.org) and Ravi Zacharias. C.S. Lewis was certainly more of an apologist than a theologian.
