Before Christ's incarnation he was Spirit. John 1:1-3 clearly states that the "Word" has always existed, he was with (near/towards) God and was God in nature, essence and substance. He created all things and nothing exists that he did not create. 

As the Word of God he is and has always been the communicator. Bearing in mind that he created all things, I believe he was the "voice" (Word) of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day in (Genesis 3:8). He is the one who killed animals and covered Adam and Eve with their skins. Our blessed Lord demonstrated that the innocent must die to pay for the sins of the guilty and that without the shedding of blood there is no remission of sin. As with the sacrificial system, this was a foreshadowing of the ultimate, supreme sacrifice He himself would offer one day on the tree.
He would take on the form of human flesh through the incarnation and pour out his divine blood to not just atone (cover) mans sin but wash it away.

I believe the pre-incarnate Lord Jesus Christ was very active in the Old Testament and made several theophanic appearances. 

He appeared to Abraham in Genesis 17 announcing his covenant and the birth of Isaac in one year (not nine months). In chapter 18 he had lunch with Abraham, again announcing the birth of Isaac and the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah in Genesis 18. The Lord has a sense of humor too! Isaac means "laughter". What did Sarah do when she heard that she would conceive? She laughed. (A fulfillment of short term prophecy)

He wrestled with Jacob (Genesis 32)

He appeared as captain of the Lord's Host to Joshua in Joshua 5:13-15. 

I also believe he appeared as "The angel of the Lord" (Genesis 16, 22, Exodus 3:2, Numbers 22, Judges 2, 5, 6,13, 2 Samuel 24, 1 Kings 19, 2 Kings1, 1 Chronicles 21, Psalms 34 & 35, Isaiah 37, Zechariah 1.

Isaiah 44:6 sates: "Thus saith the LORD the King of Israel, and his redeemer the LORD of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God."

WHO IS THE REDEEMER? THE LORD OF HOSTS? THE FIRST AND THE LAST? NO OTHER GOD BESIDE HIM? 

Revelation 1:7: "And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last:"
Revelation 1:18 "I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death."

Luke 24:44-45 "And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me. Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures,"

Churches and teachers sell The Lord Jesus very short today rarely venturing outside of the Gospels. In the volume of the book it Is written of HIM.

Before Jesus told the Father to prepare him a body (Hebrews 10:4-8) so that he could come to earth to redeem man or reconcile the world back to himself, Jesus resided in the bosom of his father. John 1:18 states …”the only begotten Son who is in the bosom of the Father…” however Luke 22:69 confirms a different status of Jesus’ position after his death, burial and resurrection by saying "But from now on THE SON OF MAN WILL BE SEATED AT THE RIGHT HAND of the power OF GOD." showing that he went from being in the bosom of God to sitting on the right hand of God making intercessions for you and I Romans 8:34

I strongly agreed with Joyce Whaley, remember that God is spirit and even those who worship him must do that in spirit. So Jesus as the son of God, existed in the spirit with God the father, son and the Holy Spirit.

I believe that Jesus existed in the form of the word before His birth (John 1:1-3). He was in the blossom of the Father, and there, created all things in the Father.

He was not a human person until His birth into the world. So, God spoke the word (Jesus), and the Holy Spirit ensured the words returned to God in fulfillment.

The first time the angels, man, satan, and the creations would see what God was like was when Jesus was born. That was the first time God had a body.
Jesus ascended to heaven with this body and is sitting on the throne of God. God, as a Spirit, resides in Jesus' body (Colossians 1:19 & 2:9).

Without wandering away from the main idea of this question, I conclude by saying that Jesus existed as the word of God until His birth.
God the Father has never left His throne. He is a Spirit and remains so because He never changes.
The Holy Spirit is that Angel of God's presence and the Captain of The Lord's host. He proceeds from the Father and extends His divine presence to the earth. He was the one that met Abraham on His way to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah.
