Whom does the "him" in John 3:16 refer to, God or His Son?
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in *him* shall not perish but have eternal life. [Author's emphasis]

AMP - 16 For God so greatly loved and dearly prized the world that He [even] gave up His only begotten (unique) Son, so that whoever believes in (trusts in, clings to, relies on) Him shall not perish (come to destruction, be lost) but have eternal (everlasting) life.

It is referring to God the Son. John 3:18 "He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God."
