What does "buried with him through baptism" mean?

ESV - 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.

Buried with him in baptism simply means symbolic that you were laid next to him when he was put in the grave and also risen when came out of the grave as forever a new creature. And it means that we all that are baptized we took on his death and took on his righteousness. That is why baptism is so important why Jesus did it to clarify what we were taking on and not so much the work aspect but the beauty of his work in our lives.

To fully understand the verse, it must be studied in relation to the entire passage. If you look at Romans chapter 6 as a whole, it places baptism in its proper role. Baptism, according to Scripture, unites the believer with Christ Jesus into His death, burial and resurrection. Verses 6&7 read; "Knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin; for he who has died is freed from sin". For us as mere humans to be free from the bondage of sin and death, we must be joined with Christ into His death. The importance of baptism cannot be overlooked. I hear many try to downplay the importance of Christian baptism, claiming that baptism is a work. Without faith baptism is taking a bath. With faith it is being obedient to the will of God. In Mark 16:16 Jesus states, "He who believes and has been baptized shall be saved; but he who has disbelieved shall be condemned." (NASB) If you also read Matt 7:13-23, it is easy to see that there are going to be many that profess to be Christian that will be rejected. Compare this also with the parable of the wheat and tares in Matt 13: 24-30; 36-43. A study of the Greek used in this passage indicates that Paul was stressing the importance of Christian baptism was more than simply symbolic. The wording used for likeness, or image of Christ's death and new life that we are to walk in, are the same used to describe Christ's likeness of the Father. Importantly, Paul notes this by writing to the Romans that having once been slaves to sin we are now slaves to righteousness, to prove this so by obedience. This passage is self-explanatory. Christ died and was resurrected to everlasting life -- so, the "elect" too will follow Christ's path in the same manner. "Baptism"/ "water baptism" was spoken in parable by Christ -- it simply means "death and resurrection" of the soul. Verse 4 is even made clear by verse 5: "For if we have been planted [buried] together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection".

If water baptism saves, then Jesus died in vain. It is the baptism of the Holy Spirit that guarantees our eternal life. Ephesians 1:13-14. Romans 6:23. The GIFT of God is eternal life. The GIFT is not faith, and the GIFT is not a reward. A gift is paid in full by the giver. A reward is something you earn or work for. The GIFT of God is eternal life. Romans 3:26-28 For He is the just and the justifier of them that believe on Jesus. Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? By the law of works? Nay, but by the law of faith. Therefore, we conclude a man is justified by faith apart from the deeds of the law. Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death. We have all sinned and deserve to go to hell. Jesus paid the penalty for sin so we would not have to go to hell to pay for our sin. He took the penalty for us. He paid the sin debt so we would not have to go to hell. Since it is a free gift from God, we have nothing to boast in, You cannot boast in a free gift. The GIFT of God is eternal life. It can not be earned or worked for. It is by faith alone in Christ alone apart from any works. Romans 4:5 Romans 11:6 All grace, what Jesus did for us. Not works. Everything is already answered by Paul following it and before it, 'How can we who died to sin still live in it?' The bigger problem then understanding this chapter for most people seems to be having faith in it, and instead jumping into wordly hyper-grace wagon. Jesus is our savior but we need to pickup the cross Matthew 16:24 and put our flesh [our old sin nature] to death, die as He did and rise as He did. That shows true faith.
