Genesis 26:5 says that God did all He did for Avraham "because Avraham heeded what I said and did what I told him to do — he followed my mitzvot, my regulations and my teachings.” Avraham knew about God and all His ways because Shem the son of Noah actually lived longer than Avraham and taught him. We have every reason to believe that Avraham's "religion" was the Bible and that God chose him because he followed God in the midst of a pagan land. Joshua 24:2 says that Avraham's father and ancestors served other Gods but not that Avraham did.

It is my understanding that Moses penned the Old Testament so there was no written word to follow prior to its writing as some have suggested. Moses came after Abraham. Some men walked with the Lord such as Enoch. He did not die as God took him. Genesis 5: 21 When Enoch had lived 65 years, he fathered Methuselah. 22 Enoch walked with God after he fathered Methuselah 300 years and had other sons and daughters. 23 Thus all the days of Enoch were 365 years. 24 Enoch walked with God, and he was not, for God took him. Some men were God fearing as was Abraham first known as Abram (Heb., “exalted father”), he became the patriarch of several peoples from the area of the Levant. He is called the “father of many nations” (Gen. 17:5) and the friend of God (2 Chron. 20:7). According to the Bible, Abraham moved to the Levant from Mesopotamia. His genealogy (Gen. 11:10–32) places him in Ur when he received divine instructions to leave, along with a promise that he and his descendants would become a great nation and be blessed by God. There was the Patriarchal period, followed by the Jewish Nation and then by Christianity. So in Abraham's day, there was no religion as we think of religion today. See its definition below. PATRIARCH (head of a father’s house) — the founder or ruler of a tribe, family, or clan; the forefathers of the Israelite nation. The phrase “the patriarchs” usually refers to the tribal leaders of Israel who lived before the time of Moses. Specifically, it is used of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and the 12 sons of Jacob. Therefore, the patriarchs were the ancestors of the Israelites from Abraham to Joseph (Acts 7:8–9; Heb. 7:4). Hope this helps! God Bless
