At the start of Luke, we see it is addressed to Theophilus, who seems to have commissioned the work. In doing so, he probably paid Luke. He was wanting an accurate account so we can use this as evidence for the accuracy of what he wrote.

If you read Acts, you will see the at the start Luke is also the author, addressing it to the same person.
