The context indicates that David prayed (1 Samuel 30:8 "And David inquired of the Lord,"). He was "greatly distressed" and sought comfort from God. The word comfort is derived from two Latin words that together mean "with strength" so we get relief from our distress and are comforted (strengthened) when we read God's word and seek His will for our lives.

While David and his men are gone, the Amalekites destroy Ziklag and carry off its citizens, including David's 2 wives. David's men threaten to kill him for allowing this to happen.

Feel the pathos of David in The Message translation:

4-6 David and his men burst out in loud wails—wept and wept until they were exhausted with weeping. David’s two wives, Ahinoam of Jezreel and Abigail widow of Nabal of Carmel, had been taken prisoner along with the rest. And suddenly David was in even worse trouble. There was talk among the men, bitter over the loss of their families, of stoning him.

6-7 David strengthened himself with trust in his GOD. He ordered Abiathar the priest, son of Ahimelech, “Bring me the Ephod so I can consult God.” Abiathar brought it to David.

David knew that the encouragement he needed could only come from the Lord. He thus ordered Abiathar the priest to bring the ephod and together they sought the will of the Lord. Saul had consulted the Lord but had received no answer (1 Sam 28:3-6), but the Lord graciously replied to David’s request. The Lord orders David to attack the enemy, assuring him of victory. HW
