Good question, Eric Kean! The only verse which comes to my mind is 1 Kings 21:4. "And Ahab came into his house heavy and displeased because of the word which Naboth the Jezreelite had spoken to him: for he had said, I will not give thee "the inheritance of my fathers. And he laid him down upon his bed, and turned away his face, and would eat no bread." He was a weak-minded man, lacking moral fiber and righteousness (1 Kings 21:4). Ahab sinned in not entering into a poorer man’s feelings. Naboth was not obstinate. His vineyard was a sacred heritage, a precious tradition. If we are to be Christlike we must be considerate of others. —Lockyer And then when Naboth stands upon his conviction to the Mosaic Law, Ahab goes home and throws yet another pity party. (I'm sure there are probably more verses in the Bible about self-pity). But do you give into self-pity as Ahab did and have a pity party? Ahab was King of all Israel. He pretty much had anything he wanted, EXCEPT THAT VINEYARD. Without a doubt, we see a breaking of the 10th commandment. Exodus 20:17: “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife or his male servant or his female servant or his ox or his donkey or anything that belongs to your neighbor.” (4) “So Ahab came into his house sullen and vexed because of the word which Naboth the Jezreelite had spoken to him, for he said, ‘I will not give you the inheritance of my fathers.’ And he lay down on his bed and turned away his face and ate no food.” I’ve got a 3 year old daughter that does the exact same thing. Certainly Ahab displays covetousness, but even more, Ahab displays the root of covetousness, and that is selfishness. It is selfishness that causes us to be discontent with what we have… It is selfishness that causes us to covet what others have… It is selfishness that causes us to pout when we do not get our way… (Trace out the root of a pity-party or a bout of depression and see if you do not recognize “selfishness” at its source.)
