The section of scripture from Matt 10:40-42 is speaking about honoring each other in the Lord. The Amplified Bible puts it this way. "He who receives and welcomes and accepts you receives and welcomes and accepts Me, and he who receives and welcomes and accepts Me receives and welcomes and accepts Him Who sent Me.He who receives and welcomes and accepts a prophet because he is a prophet shall receive a prophet’s reward, and he who receives and welcomes and accepts a righteous man because he is a righteous man shall receive a righteous man’s reward. And whoever gives to one of these little ones [in rank or influence] even a cup of cold water because he is My disciple, surely I declare to you, he shall not lose his reward."

In the body of Christ there are many different members, just as in our physical body we have many parts (Corinthians speaks of this). All the parts are important and we need and honor all parts. As we receive each other and honor their giftings and callings in Christ, we are receiving them in the spirit of Christ and will be rewarded for that. Just as when someone receives you as a brother or sister in Christ, they are receiving the fellowship of Christ through you. And when they receive the Spirit of Christ, they are receiving His Father in Heaven.

A prophet’s reward was just a great reward. It was being kind to a prophet back in the days when there were prophets. Take, for example, the widow who was kind to the prophet, Elijah, in 1 Kings 17:10. She would share in the reward of his work. She and her son were living in a time of famine in Israel caused by Israel’s sin of idolatry. The famine in turn was caused by Elijah’s prayer for no rain upon the land for years (3 and ½ years to be exact).

The woman admitted to the prophet that she had to prepare her last meal and then she and her son would die of starvation (implied). He said, “OK,” but be kind to me 1st, and feed me 1st. She did and her little family was spared, and her son was spared a 2nd time, this time from an untimely death, all because she was kind to the prophet in the 1st place.

And this can be our compensation for kindness toward any spokesman for God, for our faith in Christ (Matthew 10:34-36), for our love for Christ (Matthew 10:37), for our true discipleship (Matthew 10:32-33, 39-42).
