To me the big deal about the trials which Jesus chose to endure for our sakes was the motive his enemies had for causing them: envy. I learned this from various translations of Mark 15:10: ICB: Pilate knew that the leading priests had given Jesus to him because they were jealous of Jesus. ISV: because he knew that the high priests had handed him over due to jealousy. PHILLIPS: For he knew perfectly well that the chief priests had handed Jesus over to him through sheer malice. But the chief priests worked upon the crowd to get them to demand Barabbas’ release instead. So Pilate addressed them once more, “Then what am I to do with the man whom you call the king of the Jews?” JUB: For he knew that the princes of the priests had delivered him for envy. KJV: For he knew that the chief priests had delivered him for envy. AKJV: For he knew that the chief priests had delivered him for envy. LSB: For he was aware that the chief priests had delivered Him over because of envy. LEB: (For he realized that the chief priests had handed him over because of envy.) TLB: (For he realized by now that this was a frameup, backed by the chief priests because they envied Jesus’ popularity.) MSG: It was a custom at the Feast to release a prisoner, anyone the people asked for. There was one prisoner called Barabbas, locked up with the insurrectionists who had committed murder during the uprising against Rome. As the crowd came up and began to present its petition for him to release a prisoner, Pilate anticipated them: “Do you want me to release the King of the Jews to you?” Pilate knew by this time that it was through sheer spite that the high priests had turned Jesus over to him.
